Le Constellation

Thank you very much for this illustration: File:Le Constellation bar fire diagram.svg, it helps a lot for understanding the situation. I have some suggestions:

  • adding the room called "additionnal seating area", which is visible on the original;
  • numbers 1 to 7 in reverse order: from the entrance to the most remote place in the bar (more logical) (and modify: "4 stairs to the basement" and "exit" with "entrance/exit"). I understand the present order may refer to the way people are escaping the place, but for the architectural understanding it makes more sense to start with the entrance.
  • replace the word "terrace" (meaning an outdoor space) by "veranda" (a closed space). One of the people witnessing used this wording in his description (in French, but it is the same meaning in English). At the Constellation, there is also a "terrace" with some tables outside the veranda.

@MHM55: Thanks for your compliment and feedback. Re your points:
  • I'll consider doing it on my next update.
  • Though I understand your logic, I prefer labelling it from the point of view of escapees. Additionally, starting at the entrance going in means the exit should be labelled "Entrance" when the article is more concerned about the exit. Lastly, I find it more natural to go from left to right.
  • The CNN diagram calls it a terrace. It also mentions "Outdoor seating" but I felt it irrelevant to the diagram.

OK.
  • I listened to an employee testimony, as a matter of fact he uses the term "terrasse" (French) = 'terrace' for the first part after the entrance. Sometimes it is written "terrasse vitrée" ='glassed-in terrace'. Then DeepL translates this expression back to "veranda"!
  • there is a debate about other doors ('escape door', 'service door'), testimonies telling it was closed. Some people forced one such rear door from outside to help the escapees. There would be an emergency exit in the "fumoir" ('smoking room'), which means probably the 'additional seating area'. There will probably be more detailed description in the future.
Again, thanks for your contribution. MHM (talk) 16:49, 4 January 2026 (UTC)
@MHM55: My pleasure.
  • In that case, "Terrace" seems appropriate.
  • The CNN graphic doesn't show where this back door is, so I think not drawing the back room leaves open the possibility that the back door is there.

The following figures from a Swiss newspaper provide more details:
More information is also provided by the Swiss TV portal: https://www.srf.ch/news/schweiz/le-constellation-in-3d-neue-erkenntnisse-zur-verborgenen-bar --Leyo 12:55, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

More info here: "Drame de Crans-Montana : Des dysfonctionnements et un manque de contrôle", RTS (official television channel French speacking Switzerland), links to the "Mise au point" from 11th Jan, two movies (A. and B.) containing also models. A.1 Minute 5:20 ; the previous owner of the bar (before 2015) in front of a copy of the document asking for enlarging the veranda on the terrace (also, a more recent project), it is said that both double-doors are opening in the wrong direction re escape (up the stairs and to go out the veranda), this the previous owner knew, the previous owner says also that a door on the side of the veranda, on the right side when coming up from the stairs, used to open to the outside (but it opens to the inside in this project). A.2 Minute 7:28 CAD drawing. B. Minute 2:14-2:37 CAD drawing : the red door in the back is said to be the escape-door.
Note that the CAD drawings just given, "chapter-2-desktop-light-de" and "chapter-3-desktop-light-de" are wrong regarding the terrace doors opening to the outside.
Hopefully those infos will help for a future version. MHM (talk) 14:13, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll see what I can do as it really conflicts with the CNN version. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 11:36, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
You're right, there are different representations published until now. We may wait until something "official" comes from the authorities. MHM (talk) 21:50, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
@MHM55: @Leyo: from what I've read, the bar was remodelled, so different sources likely have plans from different times. It's likely best to wait for an official report. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 04:27, 15 January 2026 (UTC)

Catroll, Pitcher, Door??

What does the text in this actually mean? I can see "think roll as in the way a cat rolls" but why is it one word, as "catroll"? Pitcher makes plenty of sense. But what is the text for door? I get the fact that a door hinges vertically like yaw, but how is this a mnemonic? And why is it bolded as Door?

Just confused, is all, and am interested to have this explained. Could this be a language thing? ~2026-17107-8 (talk) 06:55, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

@~2026-17107-8: thanks for finding the error. A bug in the thumbnail rendered removed the space between "cat" and "roll". I'll amend it at the next opportunity.
In the British accent, "door" rhymes with "yaw". After I published the diagram, I learnt that it doesn't apply in other accents. If you know of better mnemonics, please let me know.

Hi NatForMaine, are you @GeogSage: ? If it's about the US states choropleth, I don't have much to add beyond what's on file_talk:template_map_of_US_states_and_District_of_Columbia.svg. Otherwise, could you please add it to the relevant file's talk page and ping me? I'd rather keep the discussion public on Commons or English Wikipedia, if that's ok.
