You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
A presto. --Lord Hidelan 08:26, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
D'avance merci. Givet (talk) 07:42, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
Hi! You added Template:Image personnelle into the description... What is it for? The Image is used in several templates at German-language Wiki... --AleXXw •talk!•me@de.wp 22:26, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Uhm
--Filnik\b[Rr]ock\b!? 11:15, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
SVG probs
You can check for some common SVG problems at Commons:SVG Check. Bitmaps have to be embedded within the SVG file itself. I can't advise you on how to do that with Inkscape, because I don't use Inkscape to edit SVG files (only to test or convert SVG files). AnonMoos (talk) 01:13, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
Economic maps
I agree with you. I went ahead and tried to correct the categorization. I also added, and formatted some of the "see also" links. Thank you for your categorization work. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:31, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
African geologic maps
Please go ahead with your changes. If I make any further maps like this, I will try to conform with the color conventions. I do not have a good color sense, and absolutely agree that consistency is important. Aymatth2 (talk) 15:06, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
I wish I understood the subject better - I am learning as I go along. The geologists' understanding seems to be evolving quickly, with new technology making it possible to understand the structure and history of the crust (and below) much better than in the past. I am concerned that I may be confusing old and new views of a subject in one article. Also, I do not yet know the right way to avoid extremely technical words, which will make most readers give up on the article, but to remain accurate. So ... feel free to translate, of course, but be critical of what you read in the articles I started and correct them if you can. It is a fascinating subject. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:08, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
I also see you want to learn animation. There is a very simple software, very good for begginers: Microsoft GIF Animator. Try it. It works with gif files and very easy to use. דקי 14:39, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

First: Discover a wonderful HotCat gadget for yourself. It makes reasonable edit summaries, although not so short as I would prefer. Not such dummy texts like "Moved to more specific category" which is only a bit better than nothing.
Second: Never put more general categories to specific ones, in Commons nor in Wikipedia. It would be better for you to abstain of altering categories of categories at all, unless you realize that it is a mistake regardless of (current) content.

Hello, although I understand the rationale stated in the edit summary, removing Category:Maps by theme from this category is problematic, as it leaves the cat with only Maps of international relations - which isn't on the mark on itself for covering the conflicts theme: Conflicts can occur between Colorado and Wyoming, between neighbouring municipalities, and between territorial gangs on one street. A conflict is broader in meaning than just a military unrest between nations. Regardz, Orrlingtalk 00:17, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Siberia Route 19940001.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).
The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Siberia Route 19940001.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

European rivers
Buon giorno,
Merci d'avance
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results:
We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).
In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)
We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:
We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.
Thanks, the Picture of the Year committee

Hi Relly, i purpose the files you uploaded for deletion because of a probable copyviol. I will again signal theese ones. I suggest to ask for help at map workshop to create some new copyright free maps. Take in care i have nothing against your work (i'm working too at some articles about indonesia on my mother language wikipedia).
Because of lack of material on commons i make my own a request at kartenwerkstatt, take a look there too. Regards.--Ciaurlec (talk) 23:06, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi, Ciaurlec. Actually, I don't mind anymore if those maps will be deleted. The qualities of them are low. I prefer to these ones. The maps which have been created by him are obviously awesome. The maps which I made by capturing them from Google Maps are not eye-catching. Do you know how to create maps like he has done? Tell me how. Thanks for your efforts to contribute something without copy violations.

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Che stai facendo?
Scusa Ciaurlec, ma come ti viene in mente di svuotare la categoria specifica Category:Geography maps of Italy togliendo tutte le sue sottocategorie dei rivers, mountains, ecc. per rimetterle nella categoria generica delle "Maps of Italy"? Esigo una risposta! --DenghiùComm (talk) 11:13, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
Quindi la parallela Category:Geography maps of Italy conterrà le parallele Maps of Rivers, Mountains, Gulfs, ecc. of Italy. Non c'è nessuna sovracategorizzazione. Quindi ti prego di ripristinare quanto hai disfatto. Grazie e buon lavoro. --DenghiùComm (talk) 13:34, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
Grazie. Ciao e buon lavoro. --DenghiùComm (talk) 14:29, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
Ciao e buon lavoro. --DenghiùComm (talk) 17:41, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
Ciaurlec!
Ciao. --DenghiùComm (talk) 10:47, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.
What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.
This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.
Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Attendo lumi.. grazie --Betta27 (talk) 16:45, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Allora ti devo confermare quanto sopra.. dovrò rivedere in tal senso quanto ho fatto finora in proposito..
A) kvarnerski - Quarnerine
B) srednjodalmatinski - Dalmazia centrale
C) sjeverodalmatinski - Dalmazia settentrionale
D) južnodalmatinski - Dalmazia meridionale
E) zapadnoistarski - Occidentali istriane
"Jadransko more" va tradotto con "mar Adriatico".
Nome italiano (Nome croato) oppure in caso di comune bilingue Nome italiano (Nome croato o sloveno/Nome italiano)): Koper -> Capodistria (a capo) (Koper/Capodistria); Pula -> Pola (a capo) (Pula/Pola); Rijeka -> Fiume (a capo) (Rijeka); Zadar -> Zara (a capo) (Zadar); Šibenik -> Sebenico (a capo) (Šibenik); Split -> Spalato (a capo) (Split); Dubrovnik -> Ragusa (a capo) (Dubrovnik).

Grazie.. e resto in attesa --Betta27 (talk) 20:09, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Change in my map about Metropolitan Cities
Hello,
Your correction to my map "status of the Metropolitans Cities at the beginning of 2015" introduces an error: Venice got that status only on 1st June, so this was not yet the case.
Best regards,

Wiki Loves Monuments logo
Dear Ciaurlec,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 150K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 35 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Thanks for uploading File:Parco naturale regionale Fiume Ofanto.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
Thank you.
Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 è iniziato: partecipa anche tu!
Buongiorno Ciaurlec,
Qui puoi consultare Il regolamento completo e per qualsiasi dubbio puoi scrivere a contatti@wikilovesmonuments.it.

Please understand the difference between diagrams and charts (cats)
Hello, please do not continue categorizing diagrams (like this or this) into charts categories. And also not charts into diagrams categories. Thank you.
I separated qualitative data from quantitative ones. But before continue this discussion please reorganize all the items in both categories as you mean. Thanks. Ciaurlec (talk) 16:08, 4 December 2025 (UTC)
Don't see how that applies anyhow to many or most of these files (incl the 2 examples); and also if some illustration diagram happens to include some numbers or shows sizes of components that roughly match the scaled sizing, that doesn't make them charts – basically chart show data and most often data over time or pie charts. Thanks. Prototyperspective (talk) 16:21, 4 December 2025 (UTC)
Hi, I agree with you: i made some gross mistakes. First of all, i wanted to let you know that the changes were strictly related to the search for a useful tool for managing Earth science categories. Unfortunately, the definitions of diagram, chart, and graph are unclear, especially for non-native English speakers (including German, Italian, and Czech, for example). From what I understand, we're far from having guidelines or even a consensus on the terms, as can also be seen from (Commons:Categories for discussion/2021/01/Category:Diagrams). Ciaurlec (talk) 20:53, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
Thanks. I think there is quite some agreement in that CfD. I do speak German but a word in that language isn't necessarily the same as in English and diagrams are generally distinguished from graphs and other charts and choropleth map. An option would be to consider renaming or subcategorizing diagram categories to cats named like "Geological schematic diagrams". Basically Diagrams are simplified illustrations that explain ideas, structures, and processes.. Terms are one thing; the main thing is that these two obviously very different types of information graphics are distinguished and if people have input on how to do so better, it can be added to that CfD. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:26, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
For now, i have simply separated the files into the charts and diagrams categories; i have placed all the graphs and plots in the first group; i have left the flowcharts in the second. It might certainly be useful in the future to separate the logical diagrams from the schematic ones, and perhaps make a similar distinction in the maps category between choropleths/cartograms and descriptive maps. I should point out that there are a lot of cross-sections in the earth sciences subcategories; many are more like maps than diagrams; perhaps they deserve a separate information graphics category. Finally, i haveve also read the more general discussions you've participated in; i will try to contribute gladly. Ciaurlec (talk) 23:45, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
Thanks! PS: there are some cross-section categories already, see e.g. Category:Geological cross sections but maybe you meant these categories and I see you know of that category already. Prototyperspective (talk) 00:07, 9 December 2025 (UTC)

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!
Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
