First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.
Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

what PC stands for?

Hi Julian. Thank you for sharing your pictures. Don't be discouraged. Although QIC may sometimes seem like an unwelcoming place, many users try to make it welcoming.

‘PC is needed’ is an expression used especially by one user. It usually indicates that there is perspective distortion, i.e. that the vertical lines on the right and left are not straight.

I pinged you on accident instead of the user I was replying to, sorry for the bother but thank you for being so kind!
I think I will definitely have more questions, and also would like to say that a lot of my images are slightly noisy or lack a bit of detail because I've been using a Nikon D3500 with a kit lens. I've still been trying my best to minimize these issues and have good composition and utility for Wikimedia. Soon I will be upgrading to a Nikon D810, so the quality of the images will be much better. Julian Lupyan (talk) 18:18, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
Unfortunately, things are expensive. My previous camera (14 years ago) was a Canon EOS V Mark II. I needed a car for work, so I decided to buy a small car and a large camera.

I really like the picture, but I don't understand why there is so much noise at ISO 100. There is also noise at the bottom, where there is no glass. I see CAs. --Lmbuga 23:55, 5 October 2025 (UTC)
@Lmbuga I've removed the CA (I suspect some of the CA may have actually been due to glass refraction), and I denoised the darker portions. The photo was taken from a dark room looking out, which could explain some of the noise. --Julian Lupyan 01:33, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
