Always order a {{INaturalistreview}} when uploading images from naturalist

Dear Loopy30,

First of all thank you for getting the Naturalist bot to correctly review my image on MGA73's talkpage. Secondly, whether you upload naturalist images with CC BY 4.0 or CC BY SA 4.0 licenses, you Must Type in {{INaturalistreview}} because if the naturalist copyright owner Changes the license, your image will be at risk of deletion without a review by the naturalist bot. But if the naturalist bot passes the image, it is considered "passed for life"...even if the naturalist copyright owner later puts a more restrictive license on his/her images.

I ordered a {{INaturalistreview}} for most of your images like this File:Cacodacnus lameeri.jpg and this File:Sepicana hauseri.jpg but not the ones you just uploaded 2-3 hours ago. Goodnight from Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 12:37, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Thanks Leoboudv for your message. When the iNat review bot first came out, I added the review template to all the iNat files that I uploaded. However, a couple of years later I started to notice edit conflicts, sometimes only seconds after the file was originally uploaded, that indicated that the iNatreview bot was now automatically identifying new iNat file uploads and applying the review template to them. Since that time, I only add the review template when I want to force the review through immediately so that I can load a cropped version. Only rarely is the reviewbot backed up for more than a couple of minutes, during which length of time the original author is extremely unlikely to decide to change the image license.
Bottom line is you don't need to (anymore) and it saves a step not to add it. Loopy30 (talk) 12:58, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
  •  Comment: If you are looking for good quality flickr images--or if you know someone looking for CC BY SA 2.0 images from flickr, feel free to check this Major Flickr Account. She many many photo albums filled with CC BY SA images. Feel free to tell your friends. This person, Sarah Murray I believe is a Canadian academic. Commons has only 2677 images from her 30,000 image flickr account. Just a thought. Maybe you have a friend interested in photos from Ecuador, Kenya, Greece, Republic of Georgia, Anatolia, Turkey, etc from this account. Sadly, I don't know most of these places as my expertise is in Ancient Egypt. Thanks Loopy30. Best and Goodnight from Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 11:36, 22 May 2025 (UTC)

Uploads from inaturalist are risky (wrong determination)

Hello, Please do not upload that many images from inaturalists, as they are often wrongly determined. That's quite risky, there are many selb-declared"" specialists that even don't know the species but determine them, just following others. Regards HarryWurst (talk) 06:06, 6 October 2025 (UTC)

Hi HarryWurst, welcome to Wikipedia. As with Flickr, the iNaturalist site is a valued source of rare and obscure plants and animals. So far, over 237,000 images from iNaturalist have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
I have uploaded over 10,000 "research grade" images from iNaturalist. These are images that have been positively identified by at least two different users and with more than 2/3rds agreement which results in a very high accuracy rate. In all these uploads, I am aware of only one or two misidentifications, and posting them to Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia has directly led to their correction.
If you discover a misidentified image, you are welcome to correct it. When I discover one sourced to iNaturalist, I also inform the original user on the iNaturalist site as well. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 11:31, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
Ah, no, inaturalist is the home of freaky nerds: but they do not identify and it's much too easy to have their 'research grade". There are persons that say "ok" to anything, often even wrong in the family.
It's not a valuable tool, it's for distributing fake news. For me, as a scientist that tool should be removed from the electronic: uninteresting.
Cheers

Hello Gasmasque, the US National Park Service site from which this image was taken states "*Images credited to NPS without any copyright symbol are public domain". This image has no copyright symbol and is therefore CC0. Loopy30 (talk) 19:20, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
The image is credited to the artist, Benji Paysnoe, both here and on the link given initially, and the NPS gives the disclaimer that "Images credited with a copyright symbol (indicating that the creator may maintain rights to the work) or credited to any entity other than NPS must not be presumed to be public domain; contact the host park or program to ascertain who owns the material.". I would be happy for the image to be usable on-site, but unfortunately it seems getting in touch with Paysnoe might be needed to verify it is released under a compatible license. Sorry for starting a separate thread on the matter, I hadn't noticed your reply before. I said basically the same thing there and that discussion can be disregarded. Strigilodus illustration

Sorry for tagging one of the images you uploaded for speedy deletion, but there seems to be a mistake regarding its attribution to the NPS. The image is attributed only to Benji Paysnoe on the nps.gov site, and a disclaimer is given that " Images credited with a copyright symbol (indicating that the creator may maintain rights to the work) or credited to any entity other than NPS must not be presumed to be public domain; contact the host park or program to ascertain who owns the material." If you have been in contact with Paysnoe or with the NPS about the image then I apologize for the tagging, but if not there is no reason to think this work is PD as it was not done by an employee of the NPS as part of their work. I bring this up here because you reverted my tagging and saying the image was in fact PD, and I wanted to clarify my reasoning. Gasmasque (talk) 01:48, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
