Thanks for uploading File:Arts Scholars' Arms.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Arts Scholars' Arms.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Thanks for uploading File:Worshipful Company of Haberdashers coat of arms.jpg.

Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Worshipful Company of Haberdashers coat of arms.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

@Cakelot1: I am much obliged for your guidance so far and after reviewing umpteen CoA uploads on Wiki Commons, I have made best endeavours as requested to provide further info for File:Adamson arms.jpg, including but not limited to Artist/Author/Source :
Artist: ML (www.ml.clara.net)
Author: Primm1234
Source: Burke's (as published & previously stated)
I hope I have entered the right info into the right place, but if not, please do let me know the correct form. (The correct application of such info remains unclear, at least to me, as it seems to vary considerably upon comparison between numerous CoA uploads.)
Trusting these amendments meet with Wiki's satisfaction & looking forward to hearing further.
Please advise - many thanks.
NB. File:Sir Egerton Leigh COA.jpg, I can provide provenance and a statement of ownership of Sir Egerton Leigh's bookplate; what constitutes evidence of copyright for his CoA modern representation I commissioned: simply, my request & MG's acknowledgement? Similarly for File:Arms of Dr Donald Adamson.jpg: simply, my request & ML's acknowledgement?
PS. what a good Wiki disclaimer - surely this works for most?
This representation of a coat of arms is potentially different from the one used by the armiger (municipality or organisation) in question.
 =

“Sable, a lion
rampant or”
This coat of arms was drawn based on its blazon which – being a written description – is free from copyright. Any illustration conforming with the blazon of the arms is considered to be heraldically correct. Thus several different artistic interpretations of the same coat of arms can exist. Sometimes, the design officially used by the armiger is likely to be protected by copyright, in which case it cannot be used here.
Individual representations of a coat of arms, drawn from a blazon, may have a copyright belonging to the artist, but are not necessarily derivative works.

@Primm1234, First of do not add {{QualityImage}} to images that havn't gone through the Commons:Quality images process. Second and more importantly you have still not really explain where this emblazonment came from and how you can explain this is under {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} your claiming here. Above you claim that your the "author" ad the source is various svg elements, but that one its face seems obviously wrong as this is obviously painted and not taken from those vector elements. It being from [www.ml.clara.net] makes more sense, but then you still need to provide evidence that the artist Marie Lynskey has released it under CCBYSA2.5. If you have this proof provide it via VRT, and the same goes for Arms of Dr Donald Adamson.jpg if you have that too. In both cases, if you do not provide such evidence via VRT, I'll be opening a COM:DR on the file at some point this week.
And no {{Coa blazon}} has nothing to do with anything regards the copyrights on images. Cakelot1 talk 07:57, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
@Cakelot1 - ofc I asked for your guidance in rectifying the said CoA descriptions so apologies if not quite so as yet… Your further assistance will be much appreciated. Best Primm1234 (talk) 08:39, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
@Primm1234, see my comment bellow for specifics on what to put in the description. Thanks. Cakelot1 talk 09:35, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
@Cakelot1 - thanks your initial reply although it looks somewhat generic.
The crux of the issue here seems to be that although I commissioned these CoA illustrations and accordingly “own” their copyright, I am not the heraldic artist per se so how to satisfactorily describe their respective sources for Wiki purposes?
Except ofc for those CoA images created by Wikipedians, it seems to me there are countless coats of arms displayed on Wiki which fall foul of the licensing terms as you describe.
For Wiki’s absolute peace of mind, two solutions spring to mind:
1. hone my skills at creating vector images (not impossible I’ve already looked into it)
2. request talented Wikipedians, especially those au fait with Sodicanism, to recreate any heraldic images appearing to lack satisfactory licences for Wiki use.
A presumably unintended consequence of deleting all such CoAs will be that the majority of Wiki’s current heraldic illustrations will not survive (until they are replaced with accredited images).
Better I request suitable replacement heraldic images to be created, rather than pursuing compliance with what seems to be somewhat overzealous red tape?
I should like to continue contributing to the Wiki project, if you are agreeable, so please let me know if/how my heraldic knowledge could be put to best use. Primm1234 (talk) 08:35, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
PS. sorry for the mispagination etc above - by the looks of things, this heading for deletion, so best waste no more time trying to salvage the seemingly unsalvageable... Nonetheless, you can see that I make my uploads in good faith..? RSVP Primm1234 (talk) 09:18, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
Yes and apologies if I've come of a bit sharp, copyright on images (particularly when you didn't make them) is famously complex, and commons is pretty extreme when it comes to making sure it has its ducks in a row, on this. I've removed the no-source template from File:Arms of Dr Donald Adamson.jpg, while we figure out what's going on with it (as I believe you that File:Adamson arms.jpg) come from the same artist.
(Edit conflict) It really is simple, you just have provide evidence that you commissioned them and got full rights. The easiest an most secure route to do this is via VRT (as you have done for others).
As for what you should put in the file description to avoid confusion in the future:
  • Source = Where you got it from--in this case something like "Commissioned from xyz" or "Personal commission received by email".
  • Artist or Author = the person who did the art--in this case something like "Marie Lynskey of www.ml.clara.net"
  • Date = Should be the date that the art was made or else the year you received it.
  • Permission = should be extra info indicating why it is under the given license--in this case maybe something about how you received the rights via the commission process
Finally, I take some um bridge at the idea that my replies have been somewhat generic. I feel I have been very specific in giving you advice for this specific case. Please let me know if you need any other info. Cakelot1 talk 09:22, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
My apologies too & I am most grateful indeed for your taking the time to walk & talk me thru what is seemingly a minefield (or complex as you more precisely state)! We'll get there - let's hope ML replies with a suitable email... Again many thanks for helping steer me thru what is most definitely not my natural habitat!!! Best Primm1234 (talk) 10:30, 3 February 2026 (UTC)

Reply to Cakelot1 First of do not add {{QualityImage}} to images that havn't gone through the Commons:Quality images process. – OK – didn’t know that

Second and more importantly you have still not really explain where this emblazonment came from and how you can explain this is under {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} your claiming here – not "claiming" but hoping for your co-operative help - it is my personal CoA, I commissioned it & if one so wishes I can take a photo of it (but it won’t be such good quality as the one I uploaded). Above you claim that your the "author" ad the source is various svg elements, but that one its face seems obviously wrong as this is obviously painted and not taken from those vector elements. – ofc I stated the same in my earlier note Artist/Author/etc… It being from [www.ml.clara.net] makes more sense, - true (as with everything else I’ve stated) but then you still need to provide evidence that the artist Marie Lynskey has released it under CCBYSA2.5 – she hasn't (was not part of the agreement we made back then). If you have this proof provide it via VRT, and the same goes for Arms of Dr Donald Adamson.jpg if you have that too – mighty complicated to provide “evidence” such as you now require; had I known at the time I would have arranged accdlgy… In both cases, if you do not provide such evidence via VRT, I'll be opening a COM:DR on the file at some point this week – what’s COM:DR? presumably deletion, yes..?

And no {{Coa blazon}} has nothing to do with anything regards the copyrights on images – looks much like a disclaimer.  Preceding unsigned comment added by Primm1234 (talk  contribs) 09:18, 3 February 20263 (UTC)

@Primm1234 Sorry if I'm being unclear here, The important thing here is just proof that you have the copyrights on these images and therefore can release them under the given licenses. As not all commissioned work provide the rights to the commissioner, so it's just checking that you have the rights (see Commons:Commissioned works for info). If it wasn't made clear at the time perhaps you could email ml.clara.net to confirm this for us. Many thanks for your patience here. Cakelot1 talk 09:33, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
