Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Openrefine WikiCommon

Hi Where do I ask questions about Wikicommons and OpenRefine?

My problem right now is how to just manipulate metadata and wikitext and not upload a file?

Do I need another manifest?

Category:Pastoe productassortiment

Hoi SFauconnier, als ik het goed begrijp verschuif je net de Category:Pastoe productassortiment naar Category:Pastoe products en tegelijkertijd doe je op Wikidata een speedy delete verzoek om het wikidata lemma te verwijderen wat meteen wordt ingewilligd. Op Wikidata hier lees ik daarbij de argumentatie:

Ik mis hier wat, en misschien kan jij dat uitleggen. je vind het dus wel prima dat er een Category:Pastoe products is hier, maar niet dat daarbij een Wikidata lemma is. Zo'n Wikidata lemma zou toch juist gaan over dat productassortiment, en allerlei karakteristieken over dat productassoirtiment kunnen daar in abstractie worden verzameld. maar dat is niet de bedoeld? -- Mdd (talk) 21:21, 1 June 2025 (UTC)

Ha @Mdd, Wikidata is een database voor universeel gebruik. Op het gebied van kunst, ontwerp e.d. repliceren we de praktijk van musea en collecties. Dus we slaan individuele werken, ontwerpen, personen, organisaties en gebouwen op. Duidelijk identificeerbaren individuele dingen (d:Wikidata:Notability. We vermijden vagere categorieën. Niet elke Commons-categorie hoort een Wikidata-item te krijgen, en dit is wat mij betreft heel duidelijk een geval waar dit niet zo is. We gaan ook geen Wikidata-items aanmaken voor "producten van de HEMA", "producten van IKEA", etc. etc. SFauconnier (talk) 21:35, 1 June 2025 (UTC)

Zelf werk ik al 20 jaar aan de verbetering van de representatie op de diverse projecten. Daarbij streef ik ernaar (de laatste tijd expliciet naar) dat er op het gebied van kunst, ontwerp e.d. een representatieve weergave wordt gegeven van het bestaande geheel met de individuele delen.

Zo'n categorie productassortiment of gewoon products dat staat dan voor het geheel. Specifiek met Pastoe hebben we een afgesloten periode, waar diverse ontwerpers hebben meegewerkt, specifieke producten die zijn ontwikkeld, prijzen, andere presentaties, productlijnen, generaties, periodes etc. Juist in zo'n Wikidata lemma kan je dergelijke data begin te verzamelen. -- Mdd (talk) 21:54, 1 June 2025 (UTC)

Ok, bedankt. Mogelijk heb/had ik hier een te optimistisch beeld. Een van de belangrijkste redenen, waarom ik dit soort zaken zelf ben gaan introduceren hier op Commons was voor navigatiedoeleinden (om snel door te kunnen klikken). Maar daarvoor in de plaats gebruik ik de laatste tijd breadcrums, en dat werkt eigenlijk ook goed. Mvg. -- Mdd (talk) 23:49, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
