First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

FYI, If yu want to promote wSC2023 further you could ask in Talk:Accueil to put a link on the fr-N main page. I usually do it for the Italian main page. The fr-N main page has circathan 1500 visits per day

This image was already correctly catted to Le Monde Illustré (1874), it did not require to be additionally catted to its immediate parent Le Monde Illustré. Broichmore (talk) 10:28, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

VIRIN

Hi,

I noticed you found the virin for some videos that aren't on internet archive... is there is a source of VIRINs somewhere I can use, as I have a dataset of videos where I only have the video id and the DOD id, but not the VIRIN and I'd like to connect them (since wikidata doesn't store either video id or DOD id...) Information on temporary account IP viewer rights

On November 12, temporary accounts will be enabled on Commons. The IP of unregistered users will then be hidden for most users. You, as a patroller or license reviewer, are eligible to request the new temporary account IP viewer right, if you need it to continue fighting vandalism and abuse on Commons. If you want to request the right, please file the request here. Please be aware that you also have to accept the Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy in your preferences. Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, Wiki Science Competition 2019, Wiki Science Competition 2021 and Wiki Science Competition 2023, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2025 has started in almost all the countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2025, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Chile or Bangladesh), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2026.
