Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Template:Multi-license

Leaving you a note since I edited your edit rather than reverted it, but per Template talk:Multi-license, images on Commons are allowed to have commercially-restricting licences, so long as they also have an unrestricted one in there somewhere. @Belbury Ahaa thanks for that! as long as at least one of them meets the criteria for free licenses above on COM:LICENSING. And thanks +2 for editing rather than reverting, that's so constructive and rare.

But that is a silly specification since it's clear the reuser will always pick the least restrictive if they're using it commercially (or even when not), so why as an uploader multilicense like that. Multilicenses aim at lessening restrictions from my understanding, like {{Cc-by-sa-all}} plus {{Cc-by-nc-sa-2.0-dual}}. Thanks for your msg. Waddie96 (talk) 19:27, 28 August 2025 (UTC)

@Lómelinde Hi, the category for codex already exists at Category:Wikimedia Codex icons and the gallery already exists at Wikimedia Codex icons, and if you'd like to see the template that pulla the array of colors available it's at Template:Codex icons other versions. Thats not the same. I do need such gallery for creating templates od helppages in de:wp to find comfortably new used icons (even by name) in the projekt to update helppages like de:Hilfe:Echo#Symbole sometimes I do need a colored icon and it is simply to find it in this gallery. The Template:Codex icons other versions does not the same as Template:OOUI other versions but mayby I can switch to it to reduce syntax. --Lómelinde (talk) 09:42, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
