Math conversion

That is an incredible job you did on the formulas that were uploaded by Logger9. Thank you also for marking them for speedy deletion! /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 06:59, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm confused. Why do these images need to be deleted? What criteria for speedy deletion do they meet? I think this should at the very least by turned into a mass deletion discussion where all the images are discussed at once. I don't see how any speedy criteria is applicable. Just because Wikipedia can use math code in articles, doesn't mean that someone may find an image of these formula's useful I can think of numerous useful purposes for these images that could fall within the project scope. A 3rd party that wants to reuse the formula in a non-xhtml format that doesn't support the math codes. Someone who wants to make a collage image. Just because these images have been supersede in a Wikipedia article doesn't mean we should delete them. Am I missing something, or is there a valid reason to SPEEDY delete the images?-Andrew c (talk) 16:02, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

The wiki software is generating .png files when rendering pages with math code, like en:Spinodal decomposition. If someone wants this formula, they can just copy it to their harddisk. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
