Wikimedia Korea (한국 위키미디어 협회) is a non-profit organization and a Wikimedia chapter founded by Wikimedia users in Republic of Korea for making diffusion of free knowledge. In 2012, we started a preparatory committee, and in 2014, we held the founding meeting. In 2019, we were approved as a local chapter by Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees.
Our mission
Wikimedia Korea envisions a world where people everywhere, especially Korean speakers, can freely share the full sum of human knowledge along with the unique cultural insights of the Korean-speaking world.
To realize this vision, we support and promote Korean-language Wikimedia projects, while facilitating the collection and development of educational content distributed under free licenses or in the public domain, which allows for the reuse of these works.
On the internet, information that is neutral, reliable, and freely accessible to everyone is becoming increasingly rare. Wikimedia Korea will continue to actively support the endeavors of our community members who dedicate themselves to building this invaluable resource.
Activities
- We operate and fundraise to operate online systems for the creation, collection, and distribution, respectively, of free content, focusing on the Wikimedia projects.
- We help accquire, distribute, and use information about free content, wikis and the Wikimedia projects, and promote free contents, wikis and the Wikimedia projects through events, informational materials, or others.
- We distribute and support the distribution of free content by other means, e.g., in digital or printed media, focusing on content from the Wikimedia projects.
- We develop and lead ways of developing and expanding educational content under free license and in public domain in the Wikimedia projects and other organizations.
- We resolve scientific, social, cultural, and legal questions related to free content and wikis, e.g., with expert opinions, scientific studies, and awarding of scholarships.

Our association supports Wikimedia-related events held in South Korea. Including offline meetups and editathons

- Click "단체명 찾기" to open search popup, type "위키미디어" (or the full name, "사단법인 한국 위키미디어 협회"), and select the result.

We don't have any right to access to user information or take down contents of Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia. If you want user data or contents takedown, see more at foundation:Legal:Misdirected requests to movement organizations for user data and content takedown.
- As an independent organization from WMF and Wikimedia community, We DON'T have any right to give adminship for Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia or to control the administrators of the projects.
