• The sound /ɡ/ is very uncommon in Belarusian, even in loanwords. It is common to pronounce /ɣ/ (or /x/ in devoiced positions) regardless of etymology.

• The letter ґ (g) conveys the sound /ɡ/, which was also transmitted by the Cyrillic digraph кг (g) or less often by the letters g or ɣ. First used in the Peresopnytsia Gospels (1556-1561), properly introduced into the Slavic alphabet in 1619 by Meletius Smotrytsky in his “Slavonic Grammar”.

Usage notes

• Usage is not optional, compared to its counterpart in Belarusian and Ukrainian which often use г (h) in lieu; compare Pannonian Rusyn гамбурґер (hamburger) and Ukrainian гамбургер (hamburher), where the latter spelling would be considered incorrect in Pannonian Rusyn.
• That being said, note that internationalisms ending in -gram tend to take the ending -грама (-hrama) in Pannonian Rusyn, over the expected form -ґрам (-gram), such as телеграма (telehrama, “telegram”), whereas телеґрам (telegram) is obsolete.
