Perhaps doublet of dialectal arxanc (“vegetable garden; household plot”), that is arxa (“back [of the house]”) + -(n)cCategory:Azerbaijani terms suffixed with -(n)c#ARHAC. Final -nc varies regularly with -c, compare e.g. Azerbaijani qılıc~qılınc (“sword”).
Alternatively, from Middle MongolCategory:Azerbaijani terms derived from Middle Mongol#ARHAC ᠠᠷᠭᠠᠮᠵᠢ (arɣamǰi); compare Khalkha Mongolian аргамж (argamž, “long rope for tying livestock for keeping to graze around”); Mongolic borrowings: Kyrgyz аргамжы (argamjı), Tajik арғамчин (arġamčin).
