Etymology
From Proto-SlavicCategory:Serbo-Croatian terms derived from Proto-Slavic#NISTE *ne + *este, second-person plural present tense form of *byti. This formation later created *ne jesmъ in the South Slavic vernaculars, which merged to become něste (attested in the 14th century). Because of the yat reflex, něste became rendered as niste in Ikavian speeches.
