Etymology
From Proto-TurkicCategory:Azerbaijani terms inherited from Proto-Turkic#CIRKCategory:Azerbaijani terms derived from Proto-Turkic#CIRK *čẹr (“rotten, foul; to rot; illness; dirt; to be sick, ill; rot; glue; anguish, sorrow”)[1] whence also Azerbaijani çürümək (“to rot”); alternatively from PersianCategory:Azerbaijani terms borrowed from Persian#CIRKCategory:Azerbaijani terms derived from Persian#CIRK چرک (čerk). However, it has been proposed that the latter Persian term is a Turkic borrowing itself (ibid.).
