First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.
Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Flag of Kuban

Hello! You have reverted my elites. Currently the middle part is pink while it should be raspberry. I used some standard Pantone colors because it is hard to find exactly what shades ware used 100 years ago. Alternatively, we can use those so-called Web-safe colors. #903 is for raspberry. It's also worth mentioning that the flag of Krasnodar Krai uses the previous shade of pinkish-red (or light raspberry i guess). Keep in mind this flag is identical to that of Kuban but with an emblem on it (here's my source) WeaponizingArchitecture (talk) 13:52, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Hey! You asked me years ago where I took the photo for File:Grand Rapids, MI skyline 2021.jpg, and it was at the end of Sunset Ave. You have to park at the end of the street and walk to the viewpoint. What tips would you give for anybody that are starting to dip their toes into making election maps?

A few weeks ago, I've uploaded File:Results of the 2024 Kurdistan Region parliamentary election.svg. It was the first time that I have made an election map so you're (maybe) going to see some commons errors that I didn't pick up on.

What I mean by "election maps" I mean something like those maps that you have listed at User:WeaponizingArchitecture/Gallery/Politics, which I would assume for you to be more experienced in making these said maps. I am recently starting to be interested in the electoral maps so I would like to hear some advice and tips that you would give to a beginner like me?

Usually I use the locator maps on commons and delete the oceans, seas, etc. and divide it up with the lines on it if it isn't already divided by province. For any region you want to do, just look up "Administrative divisions of (name)" and select a random map. WeaponizingArchitecture (talk) 19:46, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
What about the one that tell you about what parties and how much they won elections? Like for File:1991 Ukrainian independence referendum.svg, File:Canada Election 2025 Results Map.svg, File:2021 Iraqi parliamentary election results by District.svg, they see to be in various designs.
Did you all made it up from scratch? or did you also use a template for that as well?

by the way, one of my friends on discord would like for you to change Baghdad's seat amount from 69 to 71 as they are quite missing, are you able to do that? File:2025 Iraqi parliamentary election results by Governorate.svg specifically. GuesanLoyalist (talk) 21:03, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
There's usually a tool in Inkscape that lets you make squares/circles. I usually just make shades of colors based on the party's color and do that for the shades.

Detroit City Council districts

Hello,

Do you think you could update your map on Detroit City Council districts?

If you are not interested, I could do it. I've been thinking of a few different ideas: outlines instead of feel, an underlying road map/aerial map, etc. Something to to visually enhance it.
