First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Yes, it is a cool photo, but the folks over at FPC have very high standards and I doubt it would succeed. I'm no expert photographer, but the fact that the photo was taken from over a mile away from the building tells me that the very picky reviewers over there would find a way to complain about the quality. If you are more experienced than I am, then I would encourage you to nominate this image, as the subject is certainly interesting enough for FP. I'll also ping @Ikan Kekek: for his expert opinion. Also, I'm going to change the scope from "Strata, London" to "Strata, London - Frontal View, since it appears the back of the building looks quite different. I do have experience with FPC. I've been lurking over there for several months now, voting occasionally, and it's a frightening place for the amateur photographer. Trust me, I've tried nominating an image there. They will savagely beat down any nomination that isn't of the finest technical quality, and even if the quality is fine, they can shoot down a nomination because they don't like how it looks. I mean, if they can heartlessly kill a nomination like this one so easily, they would probably eat this one for breakfast. (Note: This was mostly humorous writing meant to emphasize how intimidating FPC can be, and is in no way a criticism of the very fine people over at FPC. ) —Percival Kestreltail (talk) 02:41, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Comment - This is a very good composition, and I might vote for it at FPC, but I'm a little doubtful enough people would consider the subject sharp enough. I'd suggest posting to COM:Photography critiques and asking there whether people thought this could be an FP or not. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).

Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.

October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! When I save to a JPEG, for upload to Commons, my workflow results in dashes being substituted where spaces exist. When I began uploading pictures I didn't understand why the dashes mattered. I soon figured that out but by then habits had formed and I would forget sometimes and leave the dashes in. The picture you were asking about was an earlier upload. Once uploaded, Commons makes renaming or deleting a picture so difficult I leave screwed up names even if I discover a typo, odd phrasing ("shot for bill"), etc. I rarely make the mistake anymore so when I use the filename to make the category I may not notice it's one with dashes and fail to take them out. I'd never done an MVR before so I'm not sure how it works. You commented on McKinney-McDonald House but didn't vote. I assume you have to vote on for either the old or new image?? If so, is one vote all that's necessary to replace a new image with the older?

File mover

I've approved your request for the filemover right. Make sure to pay attention to the renaming guidelines; in particular, when it is appropriate not to leave a redirect. (For your own uploads, when correcting a file name immediately after upload, you don't need to leave a redirect. In most other cases, you do.)

On a personal note, when uploading new files, would you consider adding the date in the filename? For subjects like railroad stations and cityscapes that may change over time, having the time period in the filename makes it easy to select the most current (or most relevant) file in categories. The style that I've used for my uploads (including a large number of Boston-related images) is to list the month and year, as in File:Abandoned northbound tunnel from Boylston station, July 2019.JPG. That means that the system will automatically update the file name where it's used on other wikis. Usually that will be under your username, though files with a lot of usage will be handled by bots. Placing MVR candidates was well explained but closing them was poorly explained, confusing and ponderous. I'm not sure I've done it right and I think there were more steps I didn't do because I didn't understand them. I need to explain. I successfully closed the three that have been open for a while (though maybe not correctly). The one that's the mess is a fourth, You may have noticed a text pair between a couple of the original three. I couldn't get it to work originally. I waited until the other three were done to try this one again.

Archaeodontosaurus does not try to fix problems with MVR closures, saying they're complicated and he doesn't know how. He did say, often the problem is the original approval was not closed properly. Well, it's good to see you back. I don't know if you left before I remembered I had flower pictures I could upload. But, it's been a pain. Archaeodontosaurus is head of biology or something of the sort at a university. He dises a number of my flower pictures for one reason or another. For example, Blood Lilys are also called Fireball lilys because their classic form is spherical [] (which my picture is) but he preferred a hemispherical shot he found so mine went down the tubes. I'm not sure why he did this. Maybe he has never seen a Blood Lily. But, his constantly jumping on my flowers appears to have made others reluctant to support them. Comment The color difference looks minimal to me and is probably because the first photo is backlit. As for the shape... we're merely looking at it from an adjacent side, so the spire is now on the opposite side of the building. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 27 September 2025, 23:59:59 UTC.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2025

Hello! In 2024, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, we had over 350 participants upload more than 2,700 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. If you haven't seen them yet, you can view the top-ten winners of the US competition here.

We're back with Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 in the United States throughout the month of October, and I'd like to welcome you to participate again. Check out our event page for more information.

New to this year, in addition to our typical top-ten prizes, we have new prize categories for the following:

Top 2 Native American site photos
Top 2 UAV (drone) photos

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!

Hi everyone,

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

Here are your top three winning images:

First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area.

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
