Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
Hi, i saw your message on the talkpage of the above image. Can you ask the author to send an email to OTRS (see COM:OTRS for a template) to confirm the license on the image? It's an absolutely wonderful drawing! Thanks. -- Deadstar (msg) 09:04, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
I have asked another user to help you, but in the meantime, perhaps Commons:OTRS/fr will help. -- Deadstar (msg) 08:42, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
Utopiales 2011
Bonne continuation, PierreSelim (talk) 08:55, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Cheval en QI?
Bonjour,
Cordialement,--Jebulon (talk) 18:55, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
Et voilà, ça a marché!--Jebulon (talk) 09:46, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
For future reference...
All but one of your Quality Image candidate proposals were ineligible for QI status. A number were overexposed, and most of the rest were not by Wikimedia contributors. --Pitke (talk) 10:21, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results:
We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).
In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)
We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:
We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.
Thanks, the Picture of the Year committee
You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2013 Picture of the Year contest.
In future when uploading Flickr images please provide a unique url for each and every image. You gave an album url for all your images which can be rather time consuming to find the image in question and may not remain valid especially if the Flickr user adds images to that album. Had you provided the proper url a bot could have automatically reviewed the images and passed them. That would have saved us volunteer reviewers quite a bit of time. I think I fixed all of your recent uploads but you should check them anyway just to see what type of url is actually needed. Nice images thanks. Ww2censor (talk) 14:12, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for uploading images from Wikipedia to Commons. However, the file you uploaded, File:Shalihotra manuscript pages.jpg appears to be a scaled down version of the version on Wikipedia. Please reupload the full version of the image. You can then tag the scaled down version with {{duplicate}} to have it deleted.
Consider using CommonsHelper to provide the correct image description and licensing tags. Thank you,

--Tsaag Valren (talk) 13:04, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

CommentsIt is a pity. But I think that the shadow due to the blinders is too harsh. -- Spurzem 18:08, 24 July 2017 (UTC) @Tsaag Valren: Could you try to tone down the highlights and tone up the shadows? I think this can be OK after some small fixes. --Basotxerri 09:30, 25 July 2017 (UTC) @Basotxerri: Sadly I don't know how to do that... is there a tutorial? OK, I see that you've shot the picture using a predefined camera program. If your intention is to be a more (or less) serious photographer I recommend to shoot RAW files and process them in an adecuate program like Lightroom. If you prefer to use a free program like GIMP, I've found these instructions: [] --Basotxerri 20:29, 25 July 2017 (UTC)<bɾ/>@Basotxerri: Thanks for tips ː I've done this with GIMP. --Tsaag Valren 15:02, 26 July 2017 (UTC) But don't forget that image manipulation on RAW files gives always better results. Support I have checked this submission against all six VI criteria. The geo-location criteria is unimportant as this is effectively a "studio picture" with the text giving the context of the image, but otherwise this image meets the other five criteria. For the record, I have copy-edited the scope. Martinvl (talk) 15:41, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Amicalement, --Abujoy (talk) 16:42, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators.

Wiki Loves Monuments logo
Dear Tsaag Valren,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Thanks for uploading File:LL-Q13955 (fr)-Tsaag Valren-regimber.wav. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

That's a bad record with an error, please suppress this, thanks;-). --Tsaag Valren (talk) 23:09, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
Merci, I've deleted the files. In the future, please use the {{SD|G7}} template for deletion of files you have uploaded in error. It's simpler and faster than opening a DR. Thanks, --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 03:30, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Tsaag Valren (talk) 21:02, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Hi, you renamed this image and its other two versions from Ane -> Mule on gorunds of the animal being a mule, not a donkey. I consider this an error, since the animal clearly has a fully donkey rear end and lacks horse characteristics, it's also small. Most obviously, its tail has a switch like a donkey does. --Pitke (talk) 18:17, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
Cheval noir et blanc à identifier
Bonjour Tsaag Valren. Merci d'avance. Cordialement. Père Igor (talk) 16:26, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

What's your source for the SW?
I noticed you'd added Category:First Class Van Eeckelghem under "Splashed white horses". I didn't find any sources for that with my searches, then again I didn't attempt in French. He could be Sb1, W20, or any of the so far undiscovered marking types. His pattern isn't particularly SW-like, either. --Pitke (talk) 00:05, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!
Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
