The above is one of a set of images from books dated between 1898 and 1912, which I have been photographing, titling, and uploading to Commons (see my contribs). Today I have been blocked (without formal notification on my talk page etc) from uploading the above very dull and respectable image of a 19th-century headmaster and vestry clerk with a beard. I have used the same type of licensing and sourcing for all of this set. Perhaps today my text has included some typo which I cannot identify. I have tried to rewrite the page title and text contents, with no successful upload permission.

The bot message is: "The page title "File:Henry Joseph Hagger (1).jpg" is restricted from editing or creation because it matches the following entry on the local or global blacklist: .*[НH]\W*[AΑΑ]\W*G\W*G\W*[EЕΕ]\W*R(?!(sta|ston|ty)).*, intended to prevent vandalism." I cannot see any parallel between this bot complaint and my page title or page text.

All my work is rather dull and inoffensive. I never use AI to compose text or images on WP. I do tidy up images on Gimp, but do not change content or practice deception. Update. I have now realised that the bot does not like the word, "Hagger" (the surname of the subject of the picture). Is that a vulgar or blasphemous word in American English? As an English person, I am not aware that the word is offensive in other versions of English, but maybe it is? For the present, I have changed "Hagger" to "Haggeer" on the filepage, and shall do so for the other pictures of him that I intend to upload. However this is a problem. This man was and still is a well-respected historical character in his town, and it will now be difficult for the people of his town to find his picture and details on Commons. @Storye book: Sorry, File:Henry Joseph Hagger (1).jpg is not an allowed title because of inclusion on our title blacklist with last modification Special:Diff/1141128360 and initial modification Special:Diff/9530690 to combat an LTA who has been attacking our project for over 15 years. @Jeff G.: Thank you. The reason why I used that filename is that Henry Joseph Hagger is the man's name. Anyone wanting to write an article about him will need to use the surname "Hagger" as part of the title. As a page title for Wikipedia, or for Commons filename, or Commons category name, we would only need to use the variations "Henry Joseph Hagger", "H. J. Hagger", "H.J. Hagger", and "Hagger (surname)". Surely those exceptions could be permitted in this case? I cannot imagine that your vandal would consider using those variations for their activities? Wikidata already permits "Henry Joseph Hagger" as a Wikidata title, as is currently included on the Commons "Category:Henry Joseph Haggeer" page. So please would you kindly un-ban the variations which I have bolded above? So long as I am alive and working (maybe the next ten years if I am lucky – I am old) I shall be able to notice and report any vandal infractions on those pages. @Storye book: Special:Diff/1187731050 should fix it, but I'm a bit concerned about bad side effects. I suspect that if the string contains "Henry Joseph Hagger" then it can also contain the "bad" content this was meant to prevent, because it will already have passed the test before that is explored.

Jmabel seems to be doing a fine job, better than this non-commons-admin could do, but the regex seems to be checking for Hagger twice. I would probably try something like: (?<!Henry Joseph|H\. ?J\.) I have now been able to restore both the category name and filenames from "Henry Joseph Haggeer" to "Henry Joseph Hagger". One issue remains, though. It would be lovely if that could also be resolved - although I guess we could live without it unless or until pictures of other historical persons called Hagger turn up on Commons. User:Εὐθυμένης makes many incorrect deletion tags

Hello admins, I found (User:Εὐθυμένης) tagged my file for (No source) and it was deleted although I add {{own}} template to source section when I uploaded it (own work), As is clear from the file's page this is a false report. I review the user contributions and found a lot of false reports like: 1 - 2 -3 - 4 - 5 -6 all this files has (own work) template! so where are the "missing source"?! , also I found in his talk page a lot of users complaint about his/her false tags, I don't know if these errors are due to the use of tools or what, but these false reports certainly cause many files to be deleted incorrectly, and therefore admins should intervene to prevent this. @Thuresson: Yes, it says that it's "own work". However, where is the metadata section (the code that is present in there matches, as per what another admin told me at some point in the past, a code usually associated with files coming/downloaded from face book) that usually certifies that? Also, with the same occasion, I'd also like to say that usually and most of the time it is more common for questions or disagreements to be posted on an active user's talk page instead of (repetitive?) appreciation messages. Users upload photos without metadata for all sorts of reasons, if something is out of the ordinary it would be better to either tag the image as a copyright violation or nominate the file for deletion. Thuresson (talk) 21:02, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

@Thuresson: If face book is really the source of the previously mentionned file, then, it's almost impossible to trace it back since most pages (especially if we're talking about individual user profiles) are blocked for "outsiders" as long as they don't log in. 😕 PS. I designed it with another file and the metadata is clear, if the file is missing a metadata this is not a reason for deletion and we should assume good faith. Based on my review of these "false" reports by Εὐθυμένης, I think of them as "mostly right" but incompletely explained. Half of the DRs I linked above have resulted in deletion, the other half are still ongoing. @Jeff G. I think you missed the point here. We are not discussing the issue of suspicious files or copyvio, but rather the use of an "incorrect template". If the user has doubts, he should use (COM:DR) not {{No source since}} template. This template is for files that have no source. If half of the files were deleted, this does not mean that it was the right thing to do. Perhaps the admin deleted them by mistake and did not notice and that happen with my file (the file was restored BTW).
Εὐθυμένης has already confirmed here that he meant something other than the purpose of the template, he didn't discussed "the metadata issue" with other users and didn't provide it as reason, he just tagged it and many of them was deleted which this is an important problem, and I think we should guide him to the right path and not support his wrong actions. Please delete some Unsplash files

Hi admins, can we delete the following two files

• File:American_Hot_Dogs_(Unsplash).jpg - 8 June 2017
• File:Tempelhof,_Berlin,_Germany_(Unsplash).jpg - 7 June 2017

Both the files in question were uploaded onto Unsplash past the June 5th 2017 cutoff date which under their new licence would mean these files are incompatible for Wikimedia Commons. Commons:Categories for discussion/2025/05/Category:Bangalore

Hello. Can anyone close this? It is very clear that the category should be in Bengaluru. It is now the official name of the city. Per COM:Categories#Category names "some proper names" are exempted from English language rule. This is unlike w:en:WP:COMMONNAME policy. I see now, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/sa/1.0/deed.en is a 1.0 license that is retired and not recommended. A retired and not recommended 2.0 version of that is being promoted by the user at Template:Cc-sa-2.0-jp for Japan based on this deed, but no 3.0 version, and none is offered for the US. Protect POTY 2025 from vandalism

POTY 2025 just started. CentralNotice banners are placed on all wikis with a link to POTY which usually drives huge trafic on POTY pages. Every year, POTY gets repeatedly vandalized including the contest main page (see this history for examples) until they got protected. Here are some of the pages to protect :

Since Round 2 will need another round of new protections after R1 processing… (I've set the edit=sysop to expire shortly after R1 ends) But yeah, they can simply open a new section when R2 is coming. Many thanks for the protection! Is there a way to give an exemption to ZI Jony and Ingenuity to let them the possibility to edit the pages? Right now ZI Jony can't recategorize pictures anymore because he can't edit the json pages anymore. If I understand correctly for last year the problem was solved by protecting the links through Titleblacklist and by giving at the same time an exemption to Ingenuity through an AbuseFilter : see here for more details.
