Can i upload a picture of a murder victim from a news article?

Hi! I’m working on an article about a murder and I was wondering, can I upload a photo of the victim from a reliable news source? Lemonadeyogurt (talk) 14:41, 27 March 2026 (UTC)

@Lemonadeyogurt: Hi, and welcome. Do you have permission from the copyright holder that is free enough for us per COM:L?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:46, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
Hi! I don't know! Let me check! I'm new to this! I know that the photos I'm using are from CBS News, and ABC News if that helps! Lemonadeyogurt (talk) 14:56, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
@Lemonadeyogurt: It helps me to determine that you would benefit from reading COM:NETC.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:15, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
OK, that would mean that these images are copyrighted by the news photographers. Thus, they aren't suitable for Commons - it's highly improbable that a photographer working for AP, Reuters or a freelancer selling their images to CBS etc. will grant a free license. If you're writing on the English Wikipedia, you may fall back upon their local unfree media rules: en:WP:NONFREE. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 15:16, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
Why not upload it to your respective wiki - there are less restrictions than here. Tag it as fair image. EnWiki allows it. LuvsMG481 (talk) 09:05, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
@LuvsMG481: There is nothing about "fair image" at en:WP:F.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:05, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Oh ok. Sorry I didn't know. Then why for example are images like these allowed to be uploaded as fair images. LuvsMG481 (talk) 14:12, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
@LuvsMG481: They were uploaded for fair use in particular named articles. Any other use is not fair and can be dealt with at en:WP:AIV.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:41, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
No worries :) This is Commons so lets focus on Commons issues at hand. Have a nice day LuvsMG481 (talk) 14:50, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

Pictures of historical microscopes

Hi, I've seen that the Wikipedia page for Prior Scientific is lacking some pictures. I work for the company and recently came across some photos of old instruments that Wikipedia users might find interesting and that would give more depth to the page. None of the instruments is currently available so there is absolutely no promotional purpose to them! Since I wasn't even born when some of the pictures were taken and definitely didn't work for the company, I can't say that I produced them. How should I proceed to upload them to the commons? SLawrence PS (talk) 14:52, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

@SLawrence PS: Hi, and welcome. Someone in a legal position to release copyrights for the company could read and follow VRT, carbon copying you on the resulting email message to keep you in the loop if you are not in a position to do that yourself.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:49, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
@SLawrence PS: Prior Scientific are still around, so if they own the copyrights, it should not be hard to work out who to approach. Before you approach them, though, have a look at COM:THIRD, especially COM:THIRD#What not to do. - Jmabel ! talk 17:47, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

downloading a photo

Hi, I'd like to simply download two or three photos. How do I do that? Seanoconn7 (talk) 16:26, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

@Seanoconn7: Hi, and welcome. You should be able to right click (or long tap) on the "Original file" link, or any "Date/Time" link in the "File history" section, of any file description page to save such link as a file using your browser. You may also left click (or tap) on such a link (or use the "File URL" field from the "Download" link) to display the file full-sized in your browser, possibly crash your browser if the file is too large, and if not save as a file from there.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:46, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

Posting images I inherited from a deceased parent

Can I upload photographs taken by my late father? I was his only heir and inherited his entire estate, including a large quantity of original photographic prints and 35mm slides and negatives, which I have digitally scanned. The pictures are mostly from the 1950s-1990s, and I think some of them would make good contributions to existing Wikipedia pages. Nicky Mono (talk) 21:57, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

Strictly speaking, inheritance law varies by location in the United States. For instance, my dad died intestate (i.e. without a will) in Indiana, and what I was entitled to as his only son is different than what it would have been in other states. Based on what you've written above and my not-a-lawyer/this-is-not-legal-advice perspective, you probably are the person who owns the copyright and you could probably choose to relicense them however you want, assuming that there aren't prior restraints, like if he took photos as work for hire when contracted or if he for some reason already released them under a certain license that is incompatible with relicensing. (Those are pretty unlikely.) —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:53, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
@Nicky Mono: looks quite safe. Make sure you identify you father as the author, rather than call it "own work." The appropriate way to license these when you upload would be either {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}, {{Cc-by-4.0-heirs}} or {{Cc-zero-heirs}}, depending which license you prefer to offer. I personally recommend against CC-zero: if circumstances dictate, you can always grant someone permission to use a photo without mentioning you, but once you sign it away in general you can never get it back. Also, you probably should give some thought to what you want as the attribution. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 31 March 2026 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. Where is this, exactly?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:14, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
In particular, we have multiple upload tools, so "странице загрузки" is a bit confusing. So is "Википедии" being mentioned anywhere on this site: this is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia.

Hello. I am currently trying to sort out an issue regarding an image of a minifigure on a page about a Lego character. I took a photo of a minifigure of the character, but I was wondering if it is still a free license image, because the character itself, its parent franchise, and the Lego minifigure as a whole are copyrighted. Can that be uploaded to Wikipedia or no? Blubewwy (talk) 22:41, 31 March 2026 (UTC)

@Blubewwy: That depends on the Wikipedia. For English, see en:WP:NFC.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:43, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
Possibly more to the point, it cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, the site on which you are asking this.
Also, Jeff is presuming that when you said "Wikipedia" you meant the English-language Wikipedia. Each of the Wikipedia's in different languages has its own rules. - Jmabel ! talk 00:43, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

How to delete a picture?

I uploaded a picture but it was not the one I was supposed to upload. How can I delete it and upload the correct one? :( Caeleal (talk) 01:08, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

@Caeleal, hello! You can request speedy deletion under G7 section: Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion. Deltaspace42 (talk) 14:42, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Caeleal: Hi, and welcome. If the file name and file description pages match what you wanted to upload, overwriting may be a better option. The note at COM:OW states "A file can be overwritten by any user with an account older than 4 days from the file's file description page using the Upload a new version of this file link below the File history; or via Special:Upload. Special:Upload provides two warning messages when overwriting an existing file – MediaWiki:UploadFormPreviewOverwriteError and MediaWiki:Fileexists (see also Phab:T41344). The UploadWizard does not allow overwriting of files."   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:47, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Caeleal and Jeff G.: speaking as an admin, I'd rather they did {{SD|G7}}. If they overwrite with an unrelated file, it is likely to create some confusion down the line, especially because that implies that the license they offered also applies to the accidentally uploaded file, which some other user could then place under a different filename, probably not a desired result. - Jmabel ! talk 19:29, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

I have permission

The photo I'm trying to upload is from a person who has given me express permission to use the particular picture I'm attempting to upload. Why does it keep getting flagged? AshleyLHunt (talk) 16:59, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

@AshleyLHunt: "has given me express permission" is very vague, and does not amount to a license.
I'm not sure exactly what is happening, since "getting flagged" is also vague, but have you read Commons:Uploading works by a third party? I strongly recommend you do so. - Jmabel ! talk 19:32, 1 April 2026 (UTC)

I have express permission

At the book signing and re-launching at 2026 Philippine Book Fair, I personally took pictures of the Philippines' greatest rapper of all times w:en:Gloc-9 (Aristotle Pollisco). I personally asked him about the book cover since I became interested in this book among others being sold by him at his booth. He said he made and created it, as illustrator. He granted me permission to take photos of himself holding the book https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aristotle_Condenuevo_Pollisco_Gloc-9_book_launched.jpg and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aristotle_Condenuevo_Pollisco_Gloc-9_book_raised.jpg. My query is: are these 2 photos free? Or do they violate the Derivative works (the book cover of w:en:Gloc-9 (Aristotle Pollisco)'s Mga Tula ni Aristotle Pollisco. The book cover isn't incidental in any of these two uploads). Parenthetically, before the book signing, several buyers of his book took photos of themselves holding the book (there is no question this is not free). Let me refer to the renowned historian https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ambeth_Raymundo_Ocampo_latest_book.jpg Ambeth Ocampo who permitted me also to take picture of himself with the inside title, not book cover (this is free, anyway). The reason I asked with Commons held desk is that there is a pending deletion request Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by P1898, and after research on Commons:Derivative works, I am still unable to find a clear answer. So please enlighten us on this, thank you.P1898 (talk) 09:09, 2 April 2026 (UTC).

  • @P1898: The "several buyers" are presumably not publishing commercially. Please read Commons:Uploading works by a third party (because it sounds like there are several things there that would be useful for you to know). Please feel free to come back here with more specific questions after you've read that. What it comes down to is that you need to get more formal and specific permissions than you have been getting. There is a fair chance you can salvage these, but first you need to understand what is required. - Jmabel ! talk 19:47, 2 April 2026 (UTC)

I want to change the authorship of the photo, since I am the real author. For some reason, a local university professor is listed as the author; a folder with her initials was stored on the smartphone along with the photo. Firsur (talk) 11:19, 2 April 2026 (UTC)

@Firsur: you tripped Special:AbuseFilter/265 twice (source: OP's filter log)
I roughly assume that you need the autoconfirmed permission to edit the metadata (the first line of the filter has a negation sign, aka the exclamation mark in front of '!("autoconfirmed" in user_rights)') Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 15:42, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
By the way, metadata is uploaded automatically; the system gives no guarantees of validity
"This file contains additional information such as Exif metadata which may have been added by the digital camera, scanner, or software program used to create or digitize it. If the file has been modified from its original state, some details such as the timestamp may not fully reflect those of the original file. The timestamp is only as accurate as the clock in the camera, and it may be completely wrong." Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 15:42, 2 April 2026 (UTC)

@Firsur: what is your relation to User:ЕловскаяАИ who uploaded the photo in 2019 and claimed to be the author? - Jmabel ! talk 19:51, 2 April 2026 (UTC)
I know of a person with that name; she lives in our city and works as a university professor, but she has nothing to do with this car. I own the car, I took the original photo, and I have the original photo on my computer, as well as photos from other angles. I didn't upload the photo to Wikipedia, but I also have it stored on Instagram and other social media. Firsur (talk) 10:00, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
@Firsur: at this point I think this needs to go through COM:VRT, but let's see here if we can work out what you'll need to send them. Any idea how someone other than you would have gotten the photo to upload it? Had you published it elsewhere? - Jmabel ! talk 21:14, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
I posted this photo on Instagram and drive2. It also shows up in Google search. Firsur (talk) 22:05, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
@Firsur: OK, then there are two ways to fix this.
  1. If the Instagram post is publicly visible and and predates the original upload, you (or someone else if you still can't edit) can (a) cite that Instagram post as the source; (b) make another publicly visible post from the same account on Instagram clarifying that you offer this license for the image and list that in the "permission" section of the {{Information}} template for the photo on Commons; (c) kill the current SDC where it contradicts that, and a bot will pull it again from the Wikitext.
  2. Otherwise, go through the email address provided at COM:VRT, let them know about this situation (a permalink to the discussion here should do it) and expect to go back and forth with them to sort this out. If you want me in the loop, I'm not on VRT, but you can email me via "email this user" on my user page, I can respond and provide my email address, and you can cc me when you contact VRT. e
I hope that helps. Cleaning this sort of thing up years after the fact is tough. Jmabel ! talk 22:31, 4 April 2026 (UTC)

Accidental duplicate creation of map; why I am unsure of how to proceed.

Hello! A few minutes ago I uploaded File:1886 Florida ratification referendum of 1885 Constitution.svg. After uploading it, I added the "Ballot measure maps of Florida" category, and then clicked on the category to check out similar maps. There, I realized that a map of the 1886 ratification was already there (File:1886 Florida 1885 Constitution Referendum.png). I immediately reasoned that it was logical for me to nominate my map for deletion, but I am not entirely sure if this is the best option. This is because the first map is in png format, while mine is in svg. For those not well-versed in election-style maps, svg maps are more preferred because they are easier to edit in programs like Inkscape. Please let me know what you think is the best way to proceed. Delcoan (talk) 01:39, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

@Delcoan: SVG versions are preferred, so you can leave your new map in place. I have marked the PNG map with {{Vector version available}}. MKFI (talk) 07:32, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

A bit frustrated two logos I uploaded will likely be deleted.

It is the logo of Copa Mercosul/Copa Mercosur, and a former logo of the Dominican football federation. Someone had tagged the logos for deletion as supposed copyvios, but the logos are not obvious copyvios. I'll describe the logos.

The logo of Copa Mercosur / Copa Mercosul is simple: The name of the competition in black written in the Futura typeface, a simple ball, and the waving flags of Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay (no coat of arms) and Uruguay. None of these symbols are copyrightable in my opinion.

Meanwhile, the logo of the Dominican Football Federation in question is composed of these elements: A simple outline map of the Dominican Republic, a simple design of a soccer ball, a blue F, a white D (with black outline), and a red F (in a merger of a simple F plus a simple trophy design), a simple shield design, and the name of the federation. And also, none of these elements are copyrightable in my opinion.

Both would be copyrightable in sweat of the brow/skill and labour countries, but it's not the case here.

And somehow three users voted to delete the files.

And I'm also trying to see if the logo of the Copa Mercosul/Copa Mercosur can be vectorized.

I would never upload blatant copyvios, instead I frequently tag actual copyvios, and even made an entire list in my user page. For example: Real Madrid, the 2019 and 2025 Copa Libertadores final posters, a screenshot of a live match broadcast, RCD Espanyol, Nagarjuna Cement, Bad Bunny - Debí tirar más fotos, Club Olimpia Deportivo, Goodyear, América de Cali, Internacional de Bogotá, Aeroméxico, and more.

How to deal with the frustration? Candidyeoman55 (talk) 11:36, 5 April 2026 (UTC)

Correcting and linking to the requests I mentioned above: Real Madrid, the 2019 and 2025 Copa Libertadores final posters, a screenshot of a live match broadcast, RCD Espanyol, Nagarjuna Cement, Bad Bunny - Debí tirar más fotos, Club Olimpia Deportivo, Goodyear, América de Cali, Internacional de Bogotá and Aeroméxico. These were the deletion requests I started and mentioned here. Candidyeoman55 (talk) 22:04, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
@Jmabel and in addition, Austin FC has a formal registration: VA0002356142. That's why I tagged it for deletion. Candidyeoman55 (talk) 22:06, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
@Candidyeoman55: So which are the logos you are frustrated will likely be deleted? - Jmabel ! talk 02:53, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
And at File:Austin FC.svg, why on earth did you start three separate deletion processes (a DR and two different potential speedies)? Please, pick one of these and stick to it. Yes, that is almost certainly a copyvio, but it is terribly confusing to both start a deletion discussion and slap on a speedy deletion template. Do one or the other. - Jmabel ! talk 02:59, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Why don't you delete the Austin FC logo linked above? You're an administrator here, and the logo was considered copyrightable by the US Copyright Office, so it needs a free license. Candidyeoman55 (talk) 08:56, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

  • @Yetien: I'll deal with the former pair, but the latter pair are a perfect example of images that should be linked with {{Other version}} rather than one replacing the other (the color levels are different) and I totally disagree with Candidyeoman55's request to remove the border on File:The deity Vināyaka (Kangiten).png. I know how to do it mate, given I've got Twinkle installed. If I self-nom @Busandtrainfannorthwestgeography's posts, it would render it moot.
Speedy deletions per the policy specify <7 days self-upload. For example if i want to nominate this for deletion i can before 12th April 2026 as I uploaded it yesterday. LuvsMG481 (talk) 03:57, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
Ty ok Busandtrainfannorthwestgeography (talk) 05:09, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
@LuvsMG481: you seem to be missing my point entirely. Yes, you can still nominate your own upload for deletion after a week, but it would be a DR, not a G7 speedy deletion. And what do you mean by If I self-nom @Busandtrainfannorthwestgeography's posts? That is oxymoronic, you can't "self-nom" someone else's posts. - Jmabel ! talk 06:33, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

I took the photo from the family albums of Sailat Sarkat, the grandson of Bibhuti Bhusan Sarkar (Redacted) on 6th April 2026 on my mobile taking their oral concurrence. In fact one physical copy of the photograph is I'm my possession.
Thanks
Lakshmikanta Manna (talk) 00:55, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
Hi Lakshmikanta Manna. I don't think this photo would be considered your "own work", at least not as defined by Commons. The copyright holder of the photo is, in principle, the person who took it as explained in COM:THIRD. Are you able to find out more about the en:provenance of the photo? Having physical possession of a photo is the same thing as being the copyright holder of the photo; so, the more information (who took it, where it was taken, and when it was taken) you can provide about it, the easier it will be for someone to try to assess its copyright status.Without being abe reasonably assess the photo's copyright status, it might be hard for Commons to keep it.
Finally, I removed some of the personal contact information about Sarkar's grandson that you included in your post. It's generally not a good idea to such information on Commons since pretty much anyone can see it and use it for any purpose. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:33, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
Hi, Friends,
I mentioned that I photographed from the original photo from their family albums. The original photo, as I was informed, was taken long back during pre-independence period of India( prior to 1947), by some one who can't be identified now. Since I received the concurrence from the family of Saikat Sarkar,to take a photo I mentioned myself as a copyright holder.if commons doesn't permit, I beg an apology and request you all to fund out a way out and make photograph available in the public domain as well as in Commons.
Thanks
Lakshmikanta Manna (talk) 04:04, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
I request you please do the needful.
Thanks and regards.
Lakshmikanta Manna (talk) 05:18, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
@Lakshmikanta Manna: . When you take a photograph or a photo taken by someone else, you're not considered, for the most part, to really be doing anything that involves enough creativity to establish a new copyright for the photo you took as explained in COM:2D copying. What you've done is essentially no different that taking a photo taken by someone else and using a scanner to create a digitalized version of it. So, all you really did was to recreate a photo taken by someone else in a different medium (i.e., converted a photo printed on paper to one formatted as an electronic file). When it comes to the copyright of the original photo, the copyright holder is considered to be the person who took it, and only that person can release their photo under the type of Creative Commons license you chose when you uploaded your "copy" of their photo to Commons. So, if you didn't take the original photo yourself, it's not your "own work" in an image copyright sense, and Commons can't really keep the photo as licensed without some formal way of verifying the original copyright holder's consent.
Now, it might be possible for Commons to keep the photo under some other license, which is why knowing as much information as possible is helpful. If India is assumed to be the country where the photo was taken, then the photo's copyright status under both Indian and US copyright law may matter to Commons because of COM:PUBLISH. According to COM:India, photos before 1958 are eligible for copyright protection for 50 years before they enter into the public domain; so, a photo which can be verified to have been taken in 1947 should've entered into the public domain under Indian Copyright law on 1 January 1998 (1947 + 50 years + 1 year = 1998). Under US copyright law COM:US), though, a photo taken by a citizen of a country other than the US and never published in the US would be eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law for 95 years after publication (i.e., until 1 January 2043).
Assessing the photo's copyright status under US copyright law is the tricky part because of India's URAA date of 1 January 1996. If the photo wasn't still under copyright protection according to Indian copyright law on 1 January 1996, then it also wouldn't be considered protected under US copyright law. If, though, the photo was still under copyright protection per Indian copyright law on 1 January 1996, then it might still be under copyright protection per US copyright law, regardless of its current status under Indian copyright law. I apologize if all of this is confusing, but I think there needs to be some way of verifying that the photo was taken prior to 1 January 1945 to be reasonably sure that the photo is within the public domain under both Indian copyright law and US copyright law. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:45, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: I believe (though I'm not sure) that any work that was still in copyright at the time of the 1958 Act would have had its copyright term extended per the 1958 Act (though anything that had already lost copyright before that—e.g. a photo from 1907 or earlier—would not). And I don't think URAA has any relevance to works that were unpublished as of 1996: up to first publication (and it looks like upload here would be first publication), they are just like any other previously unpublished works. Anyway, with all due respect, I would suggest that Lakshmikanta Manna should take this question to COM:Village pump/Copyright, where there will be more chance of getting an answer from someone with genuine expertise on the copyright status of previously unpublished works from pre-Independence India. - Jmabel ! talk 05:55, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
@Jmabel: . I was going by the wording of Template:PD-India-photo-1958 and in COM:India#Duration ("Photographs were formerly protected for 50 years after creation (for creation before 1958)"), but I could be misinterpreting those things. I was also equating "creation" with "publication" with respect to URAA because that seemed to be what was being done under Indian copyright law, but you're right about US copyright law being different. Thank you for clarifying this. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:13, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
@Lakshmikanta Manna: Just curious as to why you decided to ask about this particular file upload here at the Commons Help Desk? Most people typically ask about a file they uploaded after it's been tagged or nominated for deletion, especially when they don't quite understand why. Your upload File:Bibhuti_Bhushan_Sarkar-2026-04-06-16-07-35.jpg, however, doesn't seem to have ever been tagged or nominated for deletion. Are you just being cautious regarding it or did someone on Commons say there was a problem with the file's licensing? Anyway, as Jmabel posted above, you might want to try and start a new discussion about this at COM:VPC. If there's a way to possibly relicense the file that's in accordance with COM:L so that it can be kept, then someone at VPC might be able to help figure that out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:13, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
It appears the photo was originally taken on 16-07-35(1935) since while clicking for the photo it was saved as PHOTO-16-07-35.jpg that I renamed as Bibhuti Bhushan Sarkar06-04-2016-16-07-35.jpg
I place before you the facts of renaming.
Thanks and regards
Lakshmikanta Manna (talk) 09:08, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I don't follow how "PHOTO-16-07-35" means the original photo was taken on "16-07-35(1935)" (July 16, 1935). Perhaps you could clarify why you think that's the case because it would really help sort things out if it is. Was there information about when the photo was taken written somewhere on the photo? -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:44, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

File:Subtropical.png

A few days back I made a version of this map and replaced it, as the current one is supposedly based on the original author's attempt at combining two incompatible climate mapping systems. It erroneously classifies several deserts as "subtropical climates", has major issues with the borders of the climates, has mountain ranges that seem to of been drawn by hand in MS Paint, and overall does not seem to be based on any actual data. I've found that my edit has so far been reverted twice. I've attempted to point people towards the discussion page before reverting it back to the original, highly inaccurate version, though that does not seem to have led to anything constructive. I'd much prefer to avoid edit warring, though I would also like to avoid having an incredibly inaccurate map based on original research used on several different language's wikis. How should I go about handling this situation?

(I've also found that File:Tropical.png has similar issues, though I figured tackling one at a time would be ideal) AlexChillOut (talk) 18:50, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

I'd suggest you (1) stop fighting about the overwrite, (2) use {{Fact disputed}} to raise your specific issues about the existing map, (3) upload a version you prefer (preferably with good citations for what it is based on). I'd also suggest that you are far more likely to have people accept a replacement map that uses the same projection as the one it replaces. - Jmabel ! talk 22:33, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

Etiquette: Same engraving, but different scans from different institutions

Hello, there's a scan from the BnF that's pretty nice quality, but I've found a scan of the same engraving held by the NGA that's even better. And I want to use it in 2 articles on English Wikipedia.

What is the appropriate etiquette for the BnF file on Commons? It has it's own Wikidata item, as does this NGA scan. So I assume that I should leave the BnF upload alone (and not replace it), and instead create a new upload for this NGA scan? Is it okay to do that (and it's not considered redundant)? Thank you for your advice. Chao Garden 🥀 ~ hello 01:17, 7 April 2026 (UTC)

@Chao Garden: keep both, link with {{Other version}} in the "other versions" section of the template.
You say they each have their own Wikidata item; I assume for that NGA one that is Pierre Noel le Cauchois (Q76561106). What is the Wikidata item for the BnF copy? Ideally, Wikidata would have an additional item for the work in the abstract, rather than just items for individual instances, but people have typically been pretty sloppy about that.
Also: when referring to files on Commons, please use internal links, e.g. File:Pierre Noel Le Cauchois - avocat au Parlement de Normandie né à Rouen en 1740... - estampe - peint par M.lle de Noireterre ; gravé par Cathelin... - btv1b69425469.jpg, rather than URLs. - Jmabel ! talk 21:29, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you! And I was mistaken about the BnF copy; it doesn't look like it has a wikidata entry afterall. Chao Garden 🥀 ~ hello 02:24, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
@Chao Garden: for the Wikidata side, you might want to look and see if I get any useful response at d:Wikidata:Project chat#Multiple castings of a sculpture. Not exactly the same case, but I figured it was an easier one to ask about. (Modeling a particular copy of a print is really a bit unusual, like modeling a particular copy of a book. I think it happened only because someone pulled in everything from some database at the NGA.) - Jmabel ! talk 05:59, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

@DudeBushy: when you say "page" are you talking about a Wikipedia article? This is Wikimedia Commons, the media repository that is associated with Wikipedia, but any creation of an article would be there, not here. And when you say, "I can supply you with original photos," do you mean photos that are entirely your own work, or do you mean something else? If the latter, you should almost certainly at least skim Commons:Uploading works by a third party. - Jmabel ! talk 06:03, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

Can I upload?

So I wanted to (maybe) start making/updating some things about russian bandy like players and so on. But if the photos aren't mine can I still upload them? Sorry might be a stupid question, but when I try to upload through the wizard it says that I cant upload the photos that arent mine, but it also says in the country specific consent requirements:

"Without the consent of the citizen, the publication and use of his image is permissible by virtue of subparagraph 1 of paragraph 1 of Article 152-1 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, that is, when there is a public interest, in particular, if such a citizen is a public figure (holds a state or municipal office, plays a significant role in society's life in the field of politics, economics, art, sports or any other field), and the disclosure and use of the image is carried out in connection with a political or public discussion or interest in this person is significant for society. At the same time, consent is necessary if the sole purpose of publishing and using the image of a person is to satisfy the philistine interest in his private life or to make a profit." — The Plenum of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation

So can I upload? Sorry I'm new and this place feels so official, very nervous uploading stuff Yeahhellyeah (talk) 05:45, 8 April 2026 (UTC)

@Yeahhellyeah: The quoted passage is about personality rights and would be a further limitation beyond any copyright consideration. That is, even if you are the photographer, this would further limit what you can publish in Russia.
In terms of uploading content you did not create yourself, probably the clearest guidance we have is Commons:Uploading works by a third party. The short of it is: usually, you can't. Well over 95% of what is on the Internet is copyrighted and not free-licensed, so it does not belong on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 8 April 2026 (UTC)
