Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Do not upload image under wrong licenses

You've been uploading images under wrong licenses. This is copyright violation to upload a non-free image. Please avoid it in future. Linkin Prankster (talk) 13:12, 2 June 2026 (UTC)

It did include creative commons license in the YouTube video when I uploaded it. Maybe they changed the license. BinaryBrainBug (talk) 13:29, 2 June 2026 (UTC)

Thankfully, the video is archived here: https://web.archive.org/web/20260516111510/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6WWaRiPKOc&t=33s . See the description "License Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)". I have uploaded other video images also like this, see Temba Bavuma's profile picture. I wouldn't intentionally violate licenses. I have been working tirelessly to find copyright images from bad users like User:Summerslam2022 and removing them successfully. Please put evidence of the license next time, as the licenses are no longer mentioned in the video it will cause confusion.

I've also removed the copyvio notice on the other image you mentioned. I didn't notice its CC license.

A few comments on your deletion spree: Please use the license {{Youtube}} license for future uploads from YouTube, and this for Uploads on YouTube with CC before July 2025, or the {{YouTube CC-BY 4.0}} license for video screens after July 2025. Please also include an archive link for each file; ideally, you should create it yourself at https://web.archive.org/ . Note: Even if the uploader removes the license from YouTube, it cannot be revoked and in this sense the license remains valid. @Ziv What about c:File:Lash Legend at FOS 2026 (cropped).png? The image was uploaded on June 1st, after they took out the license. BinaryBrainBug (talk) 11:19, 4 June 2026 (UTC)

Unfortunately, YouTube is not transparent enough, unlike Flickr, for example, where changes to a license can be tracked in the license history. There is no saved version after May 16th. Therefore, I was unable to determine exactly when the license was revoked. User:Latino Heat ese has not been noticed uploading copyright infringements so far; they were just unlucky to crop images that were copyrighted but uploaded by someone else. Since the video in question The Business of Being ‪@WWE‬'s Trick Williams: WrestleMania 42 Behind-the-Scenes was previously licensed under a Creative Commons license, I assume good intentions were behind the upload of the Lash Legend images (COM:AGF) from this user, and in that sense, I restored the two images after I had previously deleted them.
