Usage notes
Compound words beginning with the word may use the stem hovud, or the old genitive hovde-, in which case the otherwise silent /d/ is maintained. In the meaning of main or capital, the word is occasionally pronounced like /huːvʉd/ due to influence from Bokmål hoved-. In traditional dialects, however, all senses of the word share the same pronunciation. Cf. the traditional form Huøya for Hovudøya (Hovedøya), equivalent of dialectal huu, hue (“head; main”) + øy.
