- I had those thoughts too, but if it's a real car but not an unfree toy, very likely there is an exception, even though it has been made with Lego blocks. The object could also be considered a 3D art object (not sure here), and Canada has FOP for that. Юрий Д.К. 20:02, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

Info High altar of the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, citadel of Carcassonne, France. The original church is thought to have been constructed in the 6th century during the reign of Theodoric the Great, ruler of the Visigoths. In 1096, Pope Urban II visited the town and blessed the building materials for the construction of the cathedral, which was completed in the first half of the 12th century. Around the end of the 13th century, during the rule of kings Philip III, Philip IV, and the episcopates of Pierre de Rochefort and Pierre Rodier, the cathedral was reconstructed in the Gothic style. c/u/n by Poco a poco (talk) 19:32, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

Oppose A deserved 1st prize winner at WLE, no doubt about its striking composition and visual impact. However, at full resolution the technical quality falls short of FP standards. Visible compression artifacts and loss of fine detail are apparent, particularly given the high resolution (~42 MP) combined with a small file size. The technical execution does not match the image's otherwise exceptional quality. Sorry. -- Radomianin (talk) 05:58, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
Comment @Radomianin It won 1st place, it could won, since jury is more watching thumbs than true size. So this is what i say "good in thumb - bad in full" or other way around. I could agree with technical, as i see, wide zoom is used, going into fisheye specter. Doing shot on 14 mm (@FF), f/13, 1/100s and ISO 2000 is not good choice. Or ideal. Info Wood anemones (Anemone nemorosa), seen in the floodplain forest near Neupotz in the Southern Palatinate, is a quintessential harbinger of spring: This photograph captures the blossom in its natural habitat on the forest floor, just before the summer canopy closes in. Abstain as author. The name “Anemone” comes from the Greek word “anemos” (wind), because the delicate flowers sway even in the slightest breeze. Taking these extreme close-ups for a focus stack is quite a fiddly task. -- Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 13:46, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

EDIT: I extracted the cropped section from the sharpest image in the batch at this stage and sent it through Google AI, and it also suggests that it’s probably not a tick. It could be, for example, a pollen beetle (such as Meligethes aeneus) or a "bacon beetle", or possibly a "dwarf orb-weaver spider" (family: Theridiidae). The flower had a diameter of about 2 cm; given the shooting distance, the magnification was likely about 1:1.5 to 1:2, and the insect probably had a body length of maybe 1 mm. --Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 05:22, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

- @PetarM, this subject is really a challenge—both during the shoot (due to the wind) and in post-processing because of the strong halos caused by focus breathing. I’ve now reworked it from scratch, using only 25 frames from the stack, and I’ve toned down the light a bit and softened the background. Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 06:17, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

Comment I love the idea (a stopped turbine with moving ones in the background, great use case for an ND filter) and the composition (for me, the negative space works well), but agree with Basile about the grey clouds. Have you tried increasing whites just on the background, to avoid clipping the wind towers and blades? --Julesvernex2 (talk) 09:58, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Nothing featurable here imo, sorry. TheBritinator (talk) 13:35, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
Comment Thank you very much for your suggestions, @Julesvernex2. I’ve already tried a few things in that direction, but the rotating wind turbines are almost impossible to mask. Right now, I don’t feel like working on the photo any further, and with the nice weather, I’d rather spend my time on botanical topics.
I took and nominated this photo because I find it funny and think it’s a nice change of pace from the usual topics here. It may not appeal to everyone, and some might even find it boring. That’s fine with me — at least those are honest opinions.
What I can’t get behind, however, are comments like “too much empty space” or “the gray clouds don’t help much”. Frankly, I consider that an unqualified statement you’d expect from a layperson. Maybe it’s just a translation error.
Here, wind turbines several dozen meters high are photographed from the ground, and I think I’ve managed the composition quite well. What would you expect as a background with this POV? Some kind of aircraft on approach? A murmuration of birds? At any rate, the low-pressure system that had built up from the west fits very well into the image’s narrative.
I’m leaving the nomination up anyway and would appreciate feedback that goes beyond mere grumbling or snide remarks. Thanks! --Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 07:39, 24 April 2026 (UTC)- Weak
Support. Clouds and sky are fine. I find the center composition not the best. Did you try to use the rule of third? --Yann (talk) 09:22, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, Yann. I usually compose my images based on the “golden ratio” or the Fibonacci sequence (as far as possible). That didn't quite work out here due to the dimensions of the subject. Right a bit less and therefore left a bit more space would have been better, sure. Cropping to a 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratio doesn't really offer any advantages, so I left it as is, leaving the final decision up to the end user. Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 03:16, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose You need more time to get blades around and around. At day, this must be more than some 15 stops, i think. Colors could be more vivid or enlightened. --Mile (talk) 10:07, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- I also took some shots of this subject with much longer exposure times, but I discarded them because I didn’t want the rotor blades to appear as circles. A full rotation would have taken about 20–30 seconds, which I wouldn’t have been able to manage at all in daylight. Have you ever tried that in practice, or is it just theory? What’s your experience with variable ND filters and the sensors and light meters in modern cameras? 😉 Achim Lammerts • Syntaxys (talk) 03:32, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

Info Kronborg Castle with its surrounding moats and defensive ramparts. The castle is one of Northern Europe’s most impressive Renaissance castles and famously serves as the setting for Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet. Located just six kilometers from Denmark’s historic archenemy Sweden, across the Öresund strait, Kronborg has always been heavily fortified and remained an active military base well into the 20th century. Somewhat surprisingly, we still have no FPs of this remarkable world heritage site.- Created, uploaded and nominated by -- ArildV (talk) 08:11, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

Oppose @ArildV F-number f/9; bricks are fine, but i more focus on Fort, they lean too. --Mile (talk) 10:10, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
Comment There are several reasons for the composition, the ramparts are very close to the castle and the area closest to the castle (inside the innermost moat) is also not accessible. So there is no way to get a picture of the castle without some part being obscured. The second reason is that the castle is not just a castle; it is also a military fortress that controlled the entrance to the Sound and the Baltic Sea for centuries. So the walls and moats are very much part of the historical value, integrity and authenticity of the site.--ArildV (talk) 10:36, 24 April 2026 (UTC)

Weak support I’ve looked at the photo a few times now, and overall I really like it; the almost monochrome composition creates a nice atmosphere. Support Image of high encyclopedic and symbolic value, documenting a representative moment of contemporary space exploration. The composition, based on the contrast between the astronaut’s silhouette and the Earth, clearly illustrates the relationship between humanity and its planet from space. It is particularly notable for depicting the first woman to travel toward the Moon, adding historical and social significance. Although the resolution is limited, as it was captured with a mobile device, this aspect reinforces its character as a testimony of our time. Its strong visual impact and wide international media circulation have made it one of the iconic images of the mission, fulfilling the criteria of value and relevance required. -- Alu (talk) 22:06, 19 April 2026 (UTC)

Oppose Stunning capture of a truly unique moment, but sadly poor technical quality, likely from image compression and automated in-phone image "optimization". --Aciarium ⚒ (talk) 16:08, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
Support The resolution may be low, but the photograph is very special: deeply human, caring, and maybe even humane, with a dynamic, multi-layered composition reinforcing the depth. It’s quite low-key and might benefit from a slight shadow reveal and a very slight overall exposure boost, if the original raw file is available, but that’s up to the author to decide. --Argenberg (talk) 17:44, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

- It appears that the trailing is from the deck pitching, which is very difficult to escape with long exposure photography in this setting. I know it's not the only issue -- just leaving it here for future reference if a similar photo is nominated. —brainandforce [yap] 15:42, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Per Aciarium, the scene looks cool but its way too noisy. TheBritinator (talk) 12:31, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
Support Lovely composition, beautiful shapes and colours, atmospheric. Not at all bothered by the "noise". Not every photograph needs to be impeccably detailed, and the "noise" in this photo gives it an impressionistic touch as well as arguably enhancing the journalistic aspect. Not to mention that the chances of getting a better quality image under such challenging conditions are minimal. Gatoclass (talk) 17:08, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

Oppose No reason to increase size (last version with "More MB (size)"). The original from flickR is not a RAW, thus the quality is certainly optimum at the beginning. -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:54, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

Info Portrait of Péter Magyar at Heroes' Square, Budapest (15 March 2026). This photograph has become an international icon of the 2026 political transition in Hungary, symbolizing the end of one era and the beginning of another. It is a professional-grade portrait with over 467.000 transclusions across Wikimedia projects. This version is a crop focused on the subject's expression; digital restoration was limited to technical cleaning of minor scratches and spots to ensure high encyclopedic standards. Created by Bánhalmi Norbert – uploaded by Bánhalmi Norbert – nominated by Bánhalmi Norbert -- Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 21:56, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Off-centre, not the greatest lighting either. TheBritinator (talk) 19:30, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you @TheBritinator
- The composition is intentional; placing the subject off-centre adds a sense of direction and purpose to the portrait, which is a common technique in environmental portraiture. The lighting reflects the actual atmosphere of the event (late afternoon sun), providing a realistic and heroic aesthetic that a more 'perfect' or artificial studio lighting would lack.

- I understand, but I just don't really like this kind of portrait. It could very well just be me. TheBritinator (talk) 20:42, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarification, @TheBritinator. I respect that personal tastes differ. My goal was to capture the raw, atmospheric reality of the moment rather than a polished studio look. It’s interesting to see how different viewers react to it—meanwhile, the community's response has been overwhelming, with the file reaching nearly 5 million views and 50,000+ transclusions in just a few weeks. I appreciate your input Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 21:01, 16 April 2026 (UTC)

Oppose Sorry, can't get over the unbalanced composition, harsh lighting (and squinting into the sun) and upward perspective (which doesn't feel intentional). Sharpness isn't great either. AVDLCZ (talk) 15:22, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks @AVDLCZ The upward perspective and off-centre composition are, in fact, intentional stylistic choices. They follow the conventions of 'heroic portraiture,' which is highly relevant in the context of a public rally to convey leadership and determination. Furthermore, the harsh lighting and the subject's expression are authentic markers of a 'raw realism' style—documenting a moment in direct sunlight during a national event, rather than a sterile, controlled studio environment.Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 20:24, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
Support In my view, the composition works very well, and the lighting complements it. – Julian Lupyan (talk) 18:15, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Julian LupyanThank you so much! Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 20:30, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Looks great in thumb size but the level of detail is unfortunately just too low, sorry Poco a poco (talk) 20:18, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Poco a poco The texture and intentional grain (noise) were preserved to evoke the atmosphere of classic photojournalism and analog film, emphasizing authenticity over digital over-processing. While 'pixel-perfection' is a standard for still-life, for a 'candid' portrait captured with a telephoto lens in a moving crowd, the encyclopedic value and the iconic nature of the shot far outweigh the need for high-frequency digital detail. Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 20:29, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I don't believe that the grain is helping anywhere and surely it isn't improving the atmosphere. Poco a poco (talk) 19:40, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Per Poco. --Aciarium ⚒ (talk) 23:26, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- @AciariumIt is important to consider the Global File Usage statistics of this image. With nearly 500,000 usages across dozens of language wikis, the community has already validated this portrait as the definitive visual representation of the subject. A 'Featured Picture' should reflect not just technical specs, but also impact and reach—this image has clearly become a central node in the global knowledge ecosystem due to its powerful artistic concept. Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 20:29, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Bánhalmi Norbert: Your description perfectly matches the requirements for Valued Images. Yes, high-impact images (like this one, without a doubt) don't need to have perfect technical quality to be eligible as Featured Pictures, and there are some cases where an image is an FP, but not a QI. However, I think there is a certain quality threshold below of which the significance of an image, no matter how high it may be, can hardly outweigh technical issues - which I think is the case here. --Aciarium ⚒ (talk) 20:36, 19 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Aciarium Thank you for your feedback. Regarding the technical quality, it is worth noting that this image has already been assessed and promoted to Quality Image (QI) status. This confirms that the community has found its technical execution (focus, exposure, and composition) to meet the required standards for high-quality media on Commons.
- While I understand that FP has a higher bar, the QI badge serves as formal recognition that there are no disqualifying technical flaws. Given that its technical soundness is already validated, I believe its extraordinary historical significance and global impact (nearly 500,000 usages) provide the "extra" value needed to reach the Featured Picture level. Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 06:31, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- I think we should let the nominated images (mostly) speak for themselves. If someone isn’t convinced by a nomination, so be it. But there is no point in trying to persuade people to support an image through lengthy arguments likely written by AI. —Aciarium ⚒ (talk) 07:34, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- I concur. As the one who (coincidentally) reviewed this for quality image, I have no doubt that it is a decent image but just not FP; an image can be a good QI but not a FP imo. Also, how much a picture is used on a page is meaningless for FP – it could have little to no value on-wiki but still work for FP. TheBritinator (talk) 19:16, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Aciarium & @TheBritinator
- Thank you for the clarification. I understand and respect your points regarding the difference between QI and FP standards, and I accept the community's perspective. (As for the AI comment: I indeed use it as a tool to ensure my thoughts are communicated clearly and professionally in English, which is not my native language.)
- One quick question: Do you think the original, uncropped version of this image ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peter-Magyar-portrait-2026.jpg#/media/File:Peter-Magyar-Budapest-15-03-2026.jpg) would be a more suitable candidate for FP nomination, or would the same technical concerns apply there as well? Bánhalmi Norbert (talk) 11:04, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
- No, that would make no difference. TheBritinator (talk) 18:46, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
