  1. torch (a lamp made of wood or flammable material on a holder)
    • 2021 May 27, IK, STA, Policija zavrača očitke o selektivni obravnavi protestnikov:
Despite warnings that all this was not allowed, the Ljubljana Police explained that even at Friday's protest a torch was lit in the crowd and longer sticks were brought in and confiscated. "The police cannot and must not tolerate such violations, regardless of who committed them. The very allegations that suggest that the police should treat foreign nationals differently amount to ethical profiling and profiling on the basis of race, religion, nationality or any other affiliation, which the police absolutely do not support. All offenders will always be dealt with in the same way," the police stressed.

Alternative forms

Etymology 1

From alteration of bakle (homosexual) possibly to sound more feminine (cf. Spanish -a (feminine suffix)), from bakli (broken by bending; bent; crooked), picturesque illustrating the incapacity of the male sex organ to exercise an erection.[1] The connotation of being broken led homosexuals around the 1970s to use other words such as badap, bading, marikona, etc. to refer to homosexuals. Compare also the analogy with English straight (heterosexual) and bent (homosexual).

Alternate theories for the etymology include:

  • From blend of babae + lalakiCategory:Tagalog blends#BAKLA.
  • From bakla (fear; worry; perturbed). See etymology 2. Perhaps attributed to cowardice or fearfulness. The insertion of the glottal stop may be a late evolution of the word.
