In oracle bone script, Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *daːws)Category:Han phono-semantic compounds#皿07: phonetic 㳄 + 舟 (“boat”) – an overflowing river.[1] This character is technically a different word than the modern 盜/盗 (dào, “steal”), used interchangeably with 衍 (OC *lanʔ, *lans) in oracle bones, or as a phonetic loan for 羨 (OC *lel, *ljans, *lans), and 延 (OC *lan, *lans) in bronze script.[2] The component 舟 corrupted into 皿 in Chu script.
盜/盗 (dào, “steal”) on the other hand, is a Ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意)Category:Han ideogrammic compounds#皿07: 㳄 (“drooling; craving”) + 皿 (“vessel”) – to covet someone else's possessions → to steal.
