Usage notes

Â is used only within words, while Î (which has the same pronunciation) is used at the beginnings and ends of words. As such, in its capital form, the letter Â is only seen within words that are completely capitalized (e.g. ROMÂNIA). Î is still used within words when forming negative past participles and gerunds (e.g. neînțeles, not *“neânțeles”, although the latter can be found in some sources).
